After Holly lost all hope of making the professional luge team in '97
and Ryan got tired of filling those astronaut application forms, the sister/brother
team (yes, we want to be sure you know we're not married) decided to join
creative energies and introduce the world to Laughing Mango Design. Inspired
by the ever so popular age of disco and polyester leisure suits, Holly
& Ryan's biggest challenge is to find the time to produce the countless
designs in their crazy little heads.
Born and raised in Brighton, Michigan, these two had an incredibly creative
upbringing with parents who were both artists. Holly had an insatiable
passion for making overstated jewelry all through high school and college.
Her work has evolved from random collage jewelry (consisting of hot gluing
everything that wasn't nailed down) to wire and bead work, to polymer
clays to finally glass. Upon graduating from Michigan State University
with an utterly useless art degree, Holly decided to head West to visit
a friend for the summer. Needless to say, that was the end of Michigan
living for her. Ryan followed several years later upon learning of the
endless opportunity for growth in the popular field of javelin throwing,
flame swallowing accounting. The rest is history.
Holly & a childhood friend taught themselves how to melt glass on her
kitchen table. At that point, she was immediately addicted and knew there
was no turning back. Immediately, Ryan too got hooked and they soon began
churning out funky jewelry like there's no tomorrow. Each piece has a
personality of it's own. Holly & Ryan try to translate the amazing world
they live in through their unique use of color in their jewelry. Bright
colors have always been Holly's trademark and this has become a signature
of their work. |
